Invisalign™ Q & A

What are Invisalign aligners?

Invisalign® aligners are clear, thin, plastic covers that fit snugly over your teeth. Every week or two, you put on a new set of aligners that are slightly more corrective than the last set. Over time, they gradually shift your teeth until they’re straight.

They are a removable alternative to traditional braces, and they have no wires, brackets, or other restrictions that come with metal braces. You can take them off to eat, brush your teeth, and floss. Invisalign aligners can straighten your teeth 50% faster than traditional braces without anyone seeing you are undergoing a teeth-straightening process.

How does Invisalign work?

First, your doctor takes a pano X-ray and makes impressions of your teeth. Then, they take a 3D CT scan of the impressions to produce a digital model of your teeth. Then your doctor uses this model to map out your step-by-step plan. Finally, they send the scans and impressions to the Invisalign lab, where your aligners are created.

On average, patients get about 24 sets of aligners. But this can vary depending on your case. In general, you will wear one set of aligners and change to a new set every 1 to 2 weeks. You will need to wear them 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, brush and floss.

Each set of aligners will gently and gradually shift your teeth into place until you reach your beautiful new smile. On average, Invisalign treatments take 12 months. Your doctor will tell you how long your treatment should take.

Who is Invisalign right for?

Invisalign works on most teens and adults. However, there are some dental conditions that aren’t compatible with Invisalign treatments — such as teeth with bridges — so a full consultation is required before treatment.

What does Invisalign treat?

Invisalign can correct a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Gap teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
